Having a termite barrier installed in your home is easily the most effective way to prevent termites. Termites are notoriously difficult to remove once a full-blown infestation has happened, and ASPC is constantly saying “When it comes to pests, prevention is always better than a cure” so give ASPC a call today to find out more about termite barrier installation in the Maitland, Cessnock and Lake Macquarie areas.
There are actually two types of termite barriers, physical and chemical:
A chemical termite barrier is a low-toxicity pesticide that is extremely long-lasting and is designed to kill termites before they enter your property. Our licensed pest controller will mix up this solution and make a perimeter around your whole property. The chemical is placed in the soil that contacts your foundations or into the foundations themselves. This may sometimes require drilling but is extremely minor compared to the damage termites can inflict on your home or business.
The mixture bonds itself to the soil and onto walls making it impossible for termites to escape. As termites are extremely social insects they will spread the pesticide to the whole colony effectively stamping it out before they can colonise your property.
These are installed as part of the construction process of the building. They don’t kill termites, they merely prevent them from entering.
Due to changing and evolving building codes, they are now mandatory in all newly built properties. Technically these aren’t barriers, they are Physical Termite Management Systems (PTMS) and vary from territory to territory as well as over time.
Your local pest controller doesn’t usually install these types of barrier or prevention but we can install PVC strips in certain locations where access is possible. We focus on the vast majority of homes and buildings that were built without physical barriers and so predominately use chemical barriers which are more effective as they actually kill termites.
Nearly all homes need a termite barrier if they are in the suburbs or surrounded by natural land. This doesn’t automatically mean inner city or houses or businesses are immune, but if you know you are in an area that has termites and think you may have them in your home, then a termite barrier prevention rather than a cure. Once termites have entered they are harder to remove and will also have done some damage.
Properties not built on slabs (slab on ground) are much more prone to subterranean termite infestations.
The other insects that a chemical termite barrier can eliminate include:
If you’re unsure of whether the home you want to buy is termite-proof, then get a termite inspection from ASPC. We will quickly be able to tell you the level of termite protection it has and whether it has an existing barrier and how effective that protection is.
This depends on the size of your property but prices commonly range from $1,500 to $3,000 or over. We give free quotes over the phone and can usually be accurate if you know the perimeter size of your property. Alternatively, book a termite inspection and we’ll give full details on your available options and what the current situation is with termites and your property
Chemical termite barriers averagely last between 5 - 8 years depending on weather and other factors. This is an incredibly long protection time for the cost so they present very good value, especially when compared to the damage and costs of an infestation. Physical barriers last much longer (20 - 50 years) but aren’t bulletproof. Not only can they easily be damaged but they don’t kill termites, they just stop them from physically entering making chemical termite barriers way more effective
Usually a non-repellant chemical barrier. This is mixed with water and spread based on the environment and physical conditions at your property. Termites cannot detect its presence and it slowly kills them while they spread it back to their colony
We only use low-toxicity pesticides meaning that it contains enough harmful ingredients for insects, but not humans or pets and other wildlife. you should inform us if your property has ground water or a well but we will ask about this to prevent any contamination. The chemical itself is safe on plant roots but not on the foliage which is why it can only be used by licensed and experienced pest controllers like ASPC
No. Besides the proper equipment and knowledge you’d need access to the right pesticides. Whilst it isn’t impossible the list of pitfalls and dangers are huge. Please leave it to licensed, experienced professionals like ASPC
